18. Who are the people he admires most in the world, both current and throughout history?
19. What are his political views?
20. And finally, what does he think is the purpose of life?
Notice that you donât have to answer vague and subjective questions like: is he trustworthy, is he a person of integrity, does he treat people fairly, is he good-natured or evil, etc. The reason for this is that by answering the above 20 questions, you will be answering those broad-based questions that define him with a more personalized approach. You will not only be discovering what he believes and who he is as a person, but also why he thinks and acts the way he does.
Ultimately, these answers should bring you to the biggest and most important question of all: What is this characterâs biggest flaw that he must overcome? That is, what is his Internal Conflict?
Donât be afraid to let your characters âcome aliveâ during this 20-question process. Let your muse run wild and let their backstories move freely in different directions.
You may find it helpful to approach these questions as if itâs a one-on-one interview with your character. Let them honestly answer these questions.
Once you know your characters and can answer these 20 questions, itâs time to call it a day. Congratulations, put Day 1 of this course in the books!
However, before you move on, we want to reiterate that we strongly encourage you to answer these 20 questions for all the significant characters in your movie. With each character you do this with, new layers of depth are added. Secondary characters will come alive during this process and what you originally envisioned as a very small role could end up becoming one of the most important characters in your movie.
